Our Favorite New Orleans Attractions and Favorite Restaurants near our
Uptown/ Garden District Bed and Breakfast

Get the most out of your New Orleans vacation with the help of your innkeepers.

Southern Comfort is in the heart of New Orleans, where there are endless options for exploration to the east, west, north, and south by hopping in a cab, jumping on the trolley, or arranging for a car.

We have provided you with links to some of our favorite New Orleans restaurants, food, music, and attractions.

MUSIC

My newest "Favorite" is Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse . This is a very classy venue, located in the Royal Sonesta Hotel at 300 Bourbon. No cover charge. Best of all, the music starts at 8pm. Irvin plays on Wednesday evenings, the remainder of the nights he has chosen New Orleans’ finest Jazz musicians. Grammy-nominated trumpeter , Leon "Kid Chocolate" Brown, Drummer Bob French and his Original Tuxedo Jazz Band, and singer and recent graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute, Johnaye Kendrick are only a few. This will be a true New Orleans experience!

Listen to the R&B sounds of New Orleans at the Maple Leaf; Tipitina's Uptown, and Rock N Bowl on Friday and Saturday nights. You'll find lots of local brass bands at Donna's and good Jazz at Snug Harbor. If you feel like dancing, be sure to visit Rock N Bowl on Thursday nights for the best Zydeco around and Cajun dancing at Tipitina's on Sunday afternoon.

My favorite local musicians are:

Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers: Trumpeter and vocalist, Kermit IS New Orleans. He is a modern hipster with an old soul that emanates the warmth that is associated with New Orleans, LA Music. He blows serious trumpet on Armstrong favorites.

Rockin' Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters: This man is the epitome of cool. He leads this high-energy performance as the washboard player. He is quite the showman with his jumps and splits.

Theresa Anderson: Known for her violin and vocals, she blends New Orleans R&B with contemporary Nashville sounds.

Irma Thomas: New Orleans own Soul Queen whose voice is unmistakable: strong, pure, and rich.

Jon Cleary: This 40-year-old Englishman has called New Orleans home since he was 17. He has toured the country with the likes of Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt. Jon has the ability to write huge melodic funk anthems that have become contemporary classics in the city. At the same time, I have seen the incredibly talented pianist play a classical recording that has brought tears to my eyes.

Irvin Mayfield: Represents the great New Orleans Jazz trumpeter legacy who has become the cultural ambassador for his city and for jazz music. He is known for the 16-piece New Orleans styled version of a Latin jazz group, Los Hombres Calientes, and his own band, The Irvin Mayfield Quintet.

You'll find a complete listing of the city's music at Offbeat Magazine.

SHOPPING

One of my favorite places in all of New Orleans is Magazine Street, where you can wander aimlessly through Antique Shops, Art Galleries, Auction Houses, and Specialty Shops. Of course, when lunch time arrives, Joey K's is a must for quick po-boys.

Don't leave town without visiting the Louisiana Music Factory, located on Decatur, in the Quarter where you'll find the largest selection of New Orleans and Louisiana music. Ask for Barry, who not only happens to be a great guy and my neighbor, but virtually knows all there is to know about our local music.

Restaurants near our Garden District Bed and Breakfast

Enjoy Cafe' au Lait and Beignets at Cafe Du Monde Coffee Stand in New Orleans French Quarter.

A wonderful Uptown dinner destination that is both fun yet refined is Upperline. My favorite here is the Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade. Joann displays an amazing collection of her favorite New Orleans, LA art.

Casamentos offers the freshest oysters in town. Third generation runs this wonderfully unique establishment known for its tiled walls and floors, not to mention, the bathroom, which is out back through the kitchen. This is a great place for lunch while shopping on Magazine St.

The Bar-B-Que Shrimp is a must at Pascal's Manale. This famous Uptown/Garden District restaurant has been family owned since 1913. The old-time oyster bar and cocktail bar offers raw oysters on the half shell and all types of cocktails.

And of course, there is Commander's Palace, located in the Garden District, one of the most acclaimed restaurants in the world. Lunch specials are the best value in town, and Sunday Brunch is the ultimate, especially if you are dining on the magnificent patio. This is dining at its finest with impeccable service. Try the Turtle Soup and Bread Pudding Soufflé.

Jacques-Imo's is one of the busiest, small, and crammed cafés in town, not only because of the wonderful food, but also because of its warm and friendly atmosphere. Jack and staff make you feel as though you have stepped into their home and will ensure a delightful evening. The Shrimp and Alligator Sausage Cheesecake is awesome but so is everything else!

The best New Orleans Gumbo can be found at another neighborhood gem, Liuzza's By The Track. Billy serves it spicy and loaded with andouille and shrimp, 'tis good! He is also famous for his lemony version of Bar-B-Que Shrimp.

You have to visit Ms. Tee Eva on Magazine St., where she'll delight you with the creamiest pecan praline.

These are only a few of my favorites - the list of culinary delights goes on and on! For additional suggestions, you might take a look at The New Orleans Menu, which is a compilation and rating listing by New Orleans food specialist Tom Fitzmorris.
